Common Bathtub Types and Sizes to Consider

As a trusted installer for acrylic shower walls, South Shore Dream Bath understands how each bathroom remodel is unique to the homeowner’s needs and preferences. But if you’re not sure what type of tub you want to be installed in your bathroom remodel, you’ll need to learn some of the most common bathtub types and sizes that may be ideal for your design.

Alcove Bathtubs

An alcove is a space bounded by three walls in a bathroom space. This is typically the most practical way to position bathtubs to maximize the space in smaller bathrooms. It’s also better for narrow spaces to have the bathtub placed alcove so that the two long walls of the room form the ends of the alcove and the back wall forms the enclosure’s side.

An alcove bathtub is usually 60 inches long and 30 inches wide, with around 16 inches in water depth. They’re more ideal in smaller bathrooms, so alcoves aren’t usually found in bigger spaces. This is because the walls are too far apart unless you consider adding a partition, which can also add a bit more privacy that separates the tub from the toilet.

Drop-In Bathtubs

Some bathrooms feature tubs that have a finished side called a skirt or an apron, and they’re usually bowed or flat. A drop-in bathtub, however, doesn’t have any factory-finished sides and is usually installed in an alcove or peninsula that juts out in the middle of the bathroom space.

Drop-in tubs are more suitable for larger bathroom spaces, as the constructed deck alone can take up more extra space than bathrooms with alcove bathtubs. Be sure to talk to your trusted contractor in bathtubs and shower enclosures to know whether it’s possible to install a drop-in tub in your bathroom remodel.

Corner Bathtubs

These types of bathtubs are ideal for large bathrooms or master suite bathrooms. They evoke a sense of elegance and luxury that greatly enhances your overall bathroom experience. While many types of corner bathtubs can fit in alcoves, they still take up a lot more space. You’ll typically find a corner tub around 60 to 72 inches long and around 48 inches wide. They also have a much deeper 20-inch water depth.
