The Common Causes of Bathtub Stains and Discoloration - South Shore Dream Bath

Nothing is more off-putting than a dirty tub. Unfortunately, even a tub that is cleaned very often seldom maintains its immaculate appearance. Even expensive tub materials are not immune to this problem. Over time, you can expect a certain amount of discoloration or staining on your bathtub. In today’s post, one of the leading installers of acrylic shower walls shares its common causes.

Hard Water

Hard water causes orange or brown stains resembling rust to build up around fixtures. These stains are caused by the iron content that is present in the water. The good news is that hard water stains are easily cleaned using white vinegar.

Strong Cleaners

Many commercially available drain cleaners tend to do more harm than good which is why one-day bath remodel companies often suggest that you avoid using them. This is because these cleaners tend to have very strong chemicals in them which can eat away at the finish of your tub.

Soap Scum

Another common cause of bathtub discoloration is soap scum. This often appears grayish and can be difficult to clean with just elbow grease alone. To get rid of it, combine equal amounts of vinegar and water into a spray bottle, then add one tablespoon of dish detergent and spray away.

Mildew

If you like taking showers in your tub, you may notice mildew stains on one side of it. Fortunately, this is also easy enough to clean. Just use a mild bathroom cleaner that contains bleach and spray it on the affected areas. Just be careful not to get the cleaner on any of the fixtures.
