If you are considering either an acrylic or fiberglass shower base, there are several factors you should keep in mind. First of all though, do bear in mind that both of these are low-cost alternatives compared to showers with ceramic or stone tiles. They are both durable, easy to maintain, and last for a long time as well. Of course, when it comes to the value of the two, it is important to note that fiberglass might be one of the least expensive materials out there, but it will have a slightly shorter shelf life because the materials are not quite as strong.
Of course, there will be various factors that come into play in regards to the life expectancy of these two products. For acrylic, a couple areas that you will have to keep in mind would be the surface. Because acrylic is harder to scratch than its fiberglass counterpart, it will not be punctured quite as easily and will often last longer. However, even though fiberglass is more susceptible to scratching, color loss, and overall damage, the materials do not cost as much, making this option easier to replace.
Finally, it is important to understand that they are both made differently. An acrylic shower is produced by taking large sheets of acrylic, reinforcing it with glass fibers and a resin to produce fiberglass, and then heating it and stretching it into a mold by way of a vacuuming form process. Finally, the resin or glass fiber material will be emphasized again to reinforce it.
Which one is right for you? That really depends on your personal tastes and values. Either way, it is important to do your research and get personal recommendations before going with one or the other.
