Why You Should Reconsider Moving Your Bathtub or Shower

Bath and shower placement is an important consideration when planning a bathroom remodel. As one of the most trusted bathtub remodeling companies in the area, South Shore Dream Bath discusses why you should rethink moving your bath area during your bathroom remodel.

Advantages of Moving the Bathtub and Shower

It’s important to note that moving the bath area involves making major changes to existing plumbing, which means parts of the wall will have to be taken out. This part of the process will reveal if your plumbing has hidden problems, such as corroded components or damaged pipes. Your remodeler or plumber will have the opportunity to perform repairs and replace damaged and corroded parts.

If this is the first time the bathroom will be remodeled after a long time, your bathroom’s existing plumbing may not be up to code anymore. A good remodeler or plumber should be able to recognize out-of-code plumbing and incorporate such changes into your bathroom remodel estimate.

Disadvantages of Moving the Bathtub and Shower

Such changes to the bathroom will significantly raise the bathroom renovation costs. In addition to planned changes, there may also be unplanned repairs caused by either hidden problems or noncompliant plumbing. Such unplanned changes are typically not part of the quoted price. This means you have to have “emergency” funds at the ready, which is usually worth about 10% to 20% of the price on the quotation.

Moving the bathtub and shower will also make partial renovations difficult. In most cases, it’s not just a simple case of moving the bathtub and/or shower area. Fixtures, lighting, and cabinetry will also have to be relocated. Holes in the drywall left by old plumbing will have to be covered or parts of the drywall will have to be replaced. Finding new tiles to match the old ones will definitely make matters more difficult if the existing tiles feature distinct designs. Replacing all of the tiles, or even a full bathroom remodel, would be more practical.
