As a rule of thumb, you should clean your tub or shower at least once a week. Keep in mind that sloppy cleaning is just as bad as neglecting to clean your bathroom. That’s because certain shower panels and tub materials are easily damaged by harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning tools.
One of these materials is acrylic, one of the most common materials used in manufacturing tubs and shower wall panels. It’s a type of plastic that’s lightweight, easy-to-install, and affordable but requires special care:
Here are some tips on properly cleaning acrylic tubs and showers:
Use an Acrylic-Safe Cleaner
It’s best to make your own mild cleaning solution. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts vinegar and warm water, and shake it to mix the solution. Spray it on the shower walls, and let it sit for at least 30 minutes or one hour for soap stains and hard water stains. Use a soft towel to wipe off residue and stains, and rinse with warm water once you’re done.
For tough-to-remove stains, you can use commercial cleaners. But make sure to check the label for harmful chemicals such as acetone and chlorine bleach. (A good rule of thumb would be to avoid using anything that’s in aerosol cans.) As for powdered oxygen bleach, different manufacturers have given conflicting advice. But just to be on the safe side, you should check the manufacturer’s website.
Avoid Abrasive Cleaning Tools
Avoid using abrasive scrubbing pads and wire brushes, which can scratch your acrylic tub or shower. Use a soft sponge instead.
Keep in mind that no amount of maintenance will restore your acrylic tub or shower’s appearance if it’s already damaged or worn-out. In general, if your acrylic tub is more than 10 years old, you might want to consider getting a replacement.
Acrylic vs. tile shower: which is better? The short answer is it depends on your needs. Consult your local contractor to learn more about your options’ pros and cons.
