The question of whether a shower or bath uses less water continues to be a subject of debate among many homeowners. As it turns out, the latter can’t measure up in terms of water usage. One-day bath remodel contractor South Shore Dream Bath investigates further.
How Much Water Is Saved When Showering?
On average, a bath uses 36 gallons of water, while a 10-minute shower uses 20 gallons. However, one might argue that not everyone fills the tub to the top. Calculations still show that either way, baths use more water than showers. If you’re not taking extremely long showers, then you’re more likely to save water when taking a shower than when soaking in a tub.
How to Save Water When Showering?
If you’re using the shower on a regular basis and still finding your water bills too high, you might want to consider the following tips.
-
Take shorter showers. Spending a shorter time in the shower will make you use less water. If your average showering time is 10 minutes, you may want to cut it down a bit. Instead of bathing for 10 minutes, you may want to go for five to six minutes so you spend even less water.
-
Change your bathroom habits. Keeping the shower on while you apply soap on your body and shampoo your hair can lead to a significant increase in your water bill. The same also happens when you turn on the shower and wait for the water to heat up. It would only take a few seconds before the water reaches the temperature you want so there’s no need to leave it for a few minutes at a time. This way, you can conserve water and save on energy.
-
Invest in water-saving technology. There are a lot of showerhead options available in the market nowadays. There are also those that help you save more water and money such as the low-flow showerhead. This type of showerhead lowers water pressure but not the performance. There are also a lot of other showerheads that can use two gallons per minute than the standard two-and-a-half gallons per minute.
